WhatsApp’s New UPI Payment Feature: Here’s What You Still Can’t Do
WhatsApp Payments based on India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI)has rolled out in India. WhatsApp payments feature based on UPI will let users send and receive money directly via WhatsApp messenger.
The feature is predicted to be immensely used owing to the app’s immense popularity in the country. The new WhatsApp payments feature is pretty convenient. Since it transfers the money directly into your bank account, it negates the use of wallet apps.
The new WhatsApp payments feature based on UPI is likely to give a tough competition to digital payment services like Paytm and Google Tez. The payments feature would take advantage of UPI and include support by a number of banks.
Here’s how you can add your bank account to WhatsApp and get started with the payments feature:
- Go to Settings -> Payments inside WhatsApp.
- In the Bank Accounts sub-head, select the Add New Account option.
- Tap Accept and Continue if you agree to the terms.
- Tap the Verify via SMS and follow the prompts to send an SMS to start the linking process.
- On the next screen, select the bank whose account you want to add.
- If you have an account (or multiple accounts) linked with the number that you just sent the SMS from, you will be presented with your account (or accounts) from that bank.
- If everything goes smoothly, you will see the UPI Setup Complete screen.
However, transferring money is the only feature it has for now. There are more features it needs to add for the payment option to be widely used by its massive user base. These are the features that it lacks.
The new feature does not let users to transfer money to any other platform except for bank account it is linked to.
As of now, WhatsApp’s payment feature is strictly confined to sending and receiving money. This means that you can’t use the app to buy products as is the case with wallet apps like Paytm or MobiKwik.
You can only send money to a single person at a time. It doesn’t let users send money to multiple people together.
If you want to send money to someone that person has to have the same version of the app. If that person’s app hasn’t been updated or he/she is on an older version, you won’t be able to transfer money.
Only updating the app version won’t work. In order to send and receive money, you would have to activate the feature as well. The payment option will be shown once someone with the feature-enabled, texts you. You can then link your account with WhatsApp to get started.
These are few of the many features that the app still doesn’t support. However, one can rely on WhatsApp to come out with these updates since it keeps on coming with newer features to make the app more interesting.
These above-mentioned features will no doubt put the app at the top of other wallet apps.
WhatsApp can rely on its user base to make its new UPI payment feature more popular than ever.
