In addition, most banks have also come up with their own app for digital transactions. Needless to say, WhatsApp will face a stiff competition.
Analysts believe WhatsApp’s UPI-based payment feature will be a major boost to the digital payment landscape in India. The feature will help the government-backed UPI-platform see a wider adoption in the country, thanks to WhatsApp’s massive user base.
Here’s a look a5t different apps that will be competing with WhatsApp’s new update in the digital transactions market.
Google launched its UPI-based app called Tez in September 2017. As of now, Tez has around 10 million users.
Google Tez allows users to transfer money through their bank accounts, and other services including UPI, QR code, and phone number.
Another interesting feature available on Google Tez is ‘Cash Mode’. This feature essentially allows users to send money to those nearby.
This feature eliminates the need to share details like your bank account number or phone number while transferring money.
Paytm is one of the most popular digital wallet apps in India. It started out as a simple app to store and transfer cash but has gone on to be much bigger.
Paytm has added various features to increase its user base. To begin with, it has the Paytm Mall which is its own e-commerce app for users to buy consumers products.
It also came up with the Paytm Payments Bank where people can create their digital debit card and perform banking functions.
Paytm also recently added UPI -based payments solution that lets you send and receive money using VPA, bank account or Aadhaar number.
The in-house messaging app, Hike, will give serious competition to WhatsApp.
Hike has been introducing new features on its platform. Some of these include Snapchat-like Stories, Timeline for posts, and most importantly ‘Hike Wallet’.
Through Hike Wallet, users can send and receive money and recharge mobile numbers. Within Hike Wallet you will find the UPI option which is powered by BHIM UPI and YES Bank.
Each of these wallet apps has their own unique advantages. The only common thing all these apps have is UPI integration.
Even if you skip Google Tez, WhatsApp has an advantage of letting you transfer money within the conversation, whereas Paytm is an e-wallet, that lets you make bill payments, and a regular bank account too.
With so many options available, consumers are spoilt for choice.
