This Could Be The World’s First ‘Triple-Lens Camera’ Smartphone
China’s biggest smartphone brand, Huawei, has started sharing media invites for an event scheduled in Paris, France for March 27.
The invite confirms the company’s imminent launch of two smartphone- the P20 and P20 Plus.
If the invites are to be believed, then the P20 will be the first major smartphone to have a triple-lens rear camera system.
Rumors have already been swirling that the P20 would feature a three-lens system, and the invite would seem to reinforce that theory. The kicker is the tagline: “See mOOOre with AI,” suggesting the camera will boast enhanced artificial intelligence features as well as an additional sensor.
Then preidc6tions have been doing the round for quite a while now. In December, a tweet from Evan Blass (@evleaks) floated the idea of a triple lens Leica rear camera system, with a 40-megapixel sensor and 5x hybrid zoom.
If the Chinese smartphone brand does launch this feature, it would become one of the most capable smartphone cameras, and consequently pave way for more smartphones with similar technology.
At the Paris event, Huawei is expected to launch three devices- the P20, the P20 Lite, and the P20 Plus. It is unclear if the three-camera lens set-up will be available on all the three devices.
It is also unclear if Huawei will use the third camera as a color lens with dual-camera or as a standard lens and a telephoto lens.
Other rumors suggest that the flagship P-series will use the triple-lens system for 40-megapixel stills with 5x zoom, so it could just be to enable multiple levels of optical zoom.
According to reports, Huawei has had a long-standing relationship with Leica, which also helped the company develop camera lenses for last year’s P10, P10 Plus. If reports are to be believed, the P20 and P20 Plus will feature 5x Hybrid Zoom, higher than the iPhone X’s 2x optical zoom.
Apart from the camera system, the P20 Lite is expected to sport an iPhone X-notch which is expected to feature on more smartphones this year as manufacturers try to trim bezels to a minimum.
In the current market scenario where most brands are managing with one camera, like the Google Pixel 2 or the iPhone 8, Huawei is taking a big leap forward with the triple-camera system.
Huawei is already known for having above satisfactory quality cameras, although not as good as those seen on Google Pixel 2, Galaxy S8, and iPhone X, so the introduction of a third lens could become a total game changer.
