The message reads “Adidas is giving away 3,000 Free Pair of Shoes to celebrate its 93rd anniversary. Get your free shoes at: Adidas.com/shoes”.

However, it is just an elaborate scam where clicking on the link can expose your personal information to cybercriminals.

According to UK tabloid Daily Express, the malicious scam has already duped thousands. Thousands of people have clicked on the link and could now be vulnerable to identity theft or fraud.

Adidas has confirmed that it has launched no such offer on individual WhatsApp numbers.

According to Lauren Haakman Brand Communications & PR Manager of Adidas South Africa, the message that states that Adidas is giving away free footwear is a hoax designed to extract personal details.

The fake website asks for the customer’s banking ID, PIN, email address, phone number, bank name among others details.

Lately, a number of such scams have sprung up on different platforms but scams on WhatsApp are the most popular. This can be attributed to the fact that the Facebook-owned social media platform is the most widely used.

Facebook bought WhatsApp for $19 billion in two years and over a billion people are believed to use the chat service every day.

If you get such a message, be sure to avoid clicking on the link lest you want to be a victim of online fraud.
