In India, jobs of engineers and doctors are considered as very prestigious. Both engineers and doctors are very important for the development of the country. In order to promote quality education in the fields of engineering and medicine, the central government also provides various scholarships for willing students. These scholarships ensure that any kind of financial issue and other obstacles does not affect their studies of the aspiring students. These government scholarships are available for the candidates belonging to the general category to minorities, girls, specially-abled students, and economically-weaker sections. The Human Resources Development Ministry’s Department of Higher Education offers “Central Sector Scholarship Scheme”, which provides the scholarships for professional courses which includes medicine and engineering. For this scholarship, the students who have scored 80-percentile in class 12th and their family income is less than Rs. 8LPA are eligible. These students get. 10,000 per academic year. A total number of 82,000 scholarships are awarded annually and those who ar3e eligible can fill applications until 30 Sep’18 on National Scholarship Portal (https://scholarships.gov.in).
Minority Affairs Ministry awards 60,000 scholarships for technical/professional courses which includes engineering and medicine, annually to the students who belong to the minority communities like Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi. Those students whose family income doesn’t exceed Rs. 2,50,000/year and has scored at least 50% in Class 12th are eligible for the scholarship. The students get Rs. 10,000/year apart from the course fees (maximum Rs. 20,000). The eligible candidates can apply for this scholarship before 30 Sep 2018.
MHRD also offers the scholarship “Saksham Scholarship Scheme” through AICTE for differently-abled students for technical education at AICTE-approved institutes. A total number of 1,000 scholarships are given to the students every year. The scholarship includes Rs. 30,000 as tuition fee and Rs. 20,000 per year as incidental allowances. The students with a disability of 40% or more and family income below Rs. 8LPA are eligible for this scholarship.
Pragati Scholarship Scheme is also offered by MHRD and it is an AICTE scholarship for meritorious girl students willing to take admission in AICTE-approved technical institutes for graduation. A total number of 4,000 Pragati scholarships are awarded every single year. The scholarship includes up to Rs. 30,000 for tuition fee and Rs. 20,000 per academic year as incidental charges. The applications for this scholarship can be submitted via the National Scholarship Portal.
Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry’s Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPD) offers the scholarship named “Post-Matric Scholarship for Students with Disabilities”. In this scholarship, graduate courses recognized by AICTE/UGC have been covered which also includes engineering and medicine. The application for this scholarship will be accepted until 31 Oct 2018.
ISHAN UDAY Scholarship Scheme
In order to promote higher education among the economically weaker sections in North Eastern Region, MHRD and UGC offer ISHAN UDAY Scholarship Scheme. A total number of 10,000 scholarships are given to the students every year for general degrees, technical and professional courses, including engineering and medicine. The student whose family income shouldn’t exceed Rs. 4.5 LPA is eligible for this scholarship.
BHEL and FAEA award scholarships for students who have socially, economically weaker backgrounds. Students who want to pursue undergraduate technical or professional courses, including engineering and medicine, from any college/institute/university are eligible for this scholarship. The shortlisted applicants are selected after interviews. In this scholarship, the full cost of the study plans including tuition-fee, maintenance-allowance, hostel/mess charges is covered.
