Follow These Steps To Lock Your Aadhaar Biometric Details

Aadhaar card is considered as the world’s largest biometric ID system, with over 1.19 billion enrolled Indians. In fact, for people living in this country, Aadhaar card has become as one of the main documents for proving one’s identity.

The fear of misuse of our personal data constantly accompanies in our lives. And so It is important for one to make sure to improve the security of Aadhaar and that nobody else is using for nefarious purposes.

The UIDAI, therefore, has come out with a set of instructions on Twitter on how you can lock this important information of yours. Biometrics are basically fingerprint and iris data that are used for your authentication as an enrolled member of Aadhaar.

These biometric data are actually stored on the UIDAI servers. Individuals can avoid their Aadhar card being mishandled by simply locking their biometric data. And locking the data isn’t as difficult as it seems. In fact, the data can be unlocked whenever required. Following is your guide to locking or unlocking your biometric data.

-The first step is to Visit UIDAI’s official website https://uidai.gov.in after landing on the site, find the tab with the locking and unlocking your biometrics purpose, that you will find under the Aadhaar Services section. The link will directly lead you to a separate page titled Lock/Unlock Biometrics’.

-After landing on another screen enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the security code in the specified blank spaces. Then an OTP for Login will be sent to your registered mobile number.

-The OTP will be sent through an SMS to the registered mobile phone number, and the OTP must be entered on the same page. Verify that OTP and click ‘Login’. To avail this service your mobile number needs to be registered with Aadhaar.

-After the verification, you will be logged in. To enable your biometric data locking just enter the security code once again and click on ‘Enable’. Your biometrics are now locked.

-This process will be finished, with the UIDAI online tool displaying the message: “Congratulation! Your Biometrics is locked.” The message also informs that you no longer will be able to authenticate by using your fingerprint or iris and that you can unlock biometrics temporarily for any authentication requirements.

Now the process to disable your biometric is also simple

-For unlocking your biometrics, the first thing you need to do is log in to the UIDAI website using the OTP-based process as mentioned above.

-Once logged in, enter the security code and then click on ‘Disable’ button.This move will disable the biometric lock. Once the lock is enabled, the user can either unlock it or disable the Locking System.

Please note that you can only lock or unlock your Aadhar information online only.
