Reliance Jio has inked a five-year partnership deal with Star India. Under the deal, Star India will broadcast all televised India cricket matches on Hotstar and JioTV applications. The partnership will consist of all T20 matches, one-day international matches, international tests matches, and all premier domestic competitions of the BCCI.
This deal means JioTV users will be able to watch all Indian cricket matches on their smartphones without the need to turn on a television. Jio Prime users get all Jio services free of charge, which means they don’t need to anything extra, except for their tariff plans to watch content online.
“Jio, the world’s largest mobile data network, announced a 5-year partnership with India’s leading broadcaster, Star India to unleash a new era in sports entertainment. Jio and Star will make all televised India-cricket matches available to users of JioTV and Hotstar in India,” said Jio in a statement.
“Every Indian must have access to the best sporting events as well as quality and affordable bandwidth to consume the content. With this partnership, we intend to address both these objectives of providing the best sporting content with the best digital infrastructure to the Jio users,” said Jio director Akash Ambani.
To watch cricket matches on the Jio TV app, users must have an active Jio number. There are no additional charges to pay in order to access the live match stream as the app is part of the suite of free content apps that the operator provides to all Prime customers. The app is available for Android and iOS. The operator has a 4G-only network and became the second-largest standalone operator in the country this July after it gained more than 11 million new users in a single month, leapfrogging Vodafone and Idea, as per TRAI data. Of course, the joint Vodafone Idea Limited entity still dwarves it in terms of user base.
People can also watch the same content on Hotstar. However, to watch the matches live, Hotstar requires users to purchase a subscription worth Rs 199 a month and Rs 999 a year. Jio users can sign into their account by using its 4G mobile data. They can also create a profile and get access to the live match stream.
